In my preliminary research on Hebrew typography, I stumbled upon Oded Ezer’s blog Spare Type and just about lost my proverbial shit. To be honest, I wasn’t doing research at all, I was messing around on Twitter and saw an intriguing link to a story titled Typo Mythology: How Type and Mankind were Created. I clicked that link not just because it sounded interesting, but it reminded me that in Jewish mystical tradition (Kabbalah), there are so many dimensions of meaning in the Hebrew letters. Unfortunately, my Kabbalah is more than a little rusty, which led to the purchase of a couple of books: The Hebrew Letters: Channels of Creative Consciousness and The Book of Letters: The Mystical Alef-Bait. I have books by both authors—in fact, I did yoga with the author of the first title—and they are both very good. I’m super excited to crack both books open.
On the subject of books—and back to the subject at hand—Oded Ezer also has a new book out, The Typographer’s Guide to the Galaxy, which I promptly plunked down my $45 for in the name of research. I will report back on when I receive it from Amazon in the next few days. Although my credit card balance isn’t thanking me, I feel like I’m going down a very interesting direction.

Ezer is an amazing typographer. This artist recently studied under him in Tel Aviv and wrote about her great experiences with him.
